Literacy Acceleration

Literacy Acceleration is an intervention strategy developed by Dr Tony Lingard and the TAs working with him over many years at two secondary schools in the South-west of England.  It is based on the idea that secondary pupils who have failed to make normal progress need to follow a literacy programme with objectives that focus directly on their learning needs.

This is in sharp contrast to the view that all secondary pupils should follow the same English curriculum, irrespective of their developmental levels.

Schools across the UK and Ireland have adopted Literacy Acceleration and found it to be successful.

Several research studies have shown Literacy Acceleration can enable secondary-age pupils who have fallen behind their peers to make substantial learning gains.   For instance, it is not unusual for pupils to make two or three years progress with reading comprehension during Year 7.

The research also indicates that Literacy Acceleration is far more effective than the normal secondary English curriculum, which is designed predominately for the majority of pupils who can already read and write.  The most recent research was published in the British Journal of Special Education, June 2005, and an abstract can be viewed on the NASEN website.

The programme can usually be implemented with minimal additional financial outlay and often using existing staffing levels.

Literacy Acceleration involves teaching the pupils concerned in small literacy groups of about 10 to 15 pupils.  Non-readers or near non-readers work individually or in twos with trained TAs.  The approach involves regular individual reading, group reading, and specific help with phonics, spelling and writing.
