Effective Pastoral Leadership

A one-day conference led by Marilyn Nathan

  • Examine what is expected of a ‘pastoral leader’ in the current climate - roles and responsibilities
  • Understand how to develop the skills you will need to be successful
  • Study how to make time for leadership - by prioritising tasks and through effective time management
  • Consider how to build and lead a pastoral team and which leadership styles are likely to be most successful
Learn by examining case studies and by looking at real life situations to enable you to translate the theory into practice

The Course The role of the pastoral leader, head of year or head of house is changing and evolving. Some schools are safeguarding the historic pastoral system and the role of pastoral/year leader; others have changed the role substantially. If you hold a pastoral post in some schools you may now be a Key Stage Manager, a Learning Manager or Director of Learning. You may be a Behaviour Manager who is not a teacher. This seminar explores the role of ‘the pastoral leader’ in the current climate. It clarifies the expectations, the skills required and how to develop them. Whatever the title, a pastoral post tends to be very demanding and pressurised so the seminar explores how to cope better with the pressures by learning to prioritise and employ effective time management strategies. The conference also covers team building for pastoral leaders as well as how to develop successful leadership styles. The course adopts a case study approach using real life situations to provide practical suggestions and guidance.
