  • Study a range of mental health problems, anxiety, depression and suicide prevention
  • Consider how to help students who self harm or are suffering from eating disorders
Jackie Cox With a degree in psychology, Jackie Cox has 30 years experience as a teacher and counsellor and she has trained many teachers and other professionals across the UK to help them effectively manage and support young people under extreme stress. For instance, she provided training for the trainers of Choose Life, the Scottish suicide prevention initiative. Her expertise includes child protection, mental health, stress, self-harm, eating disorders, family breakdown, domestic violence, sex education, sexual abuse, substance abuse, rape, bullying, bereavement and grief, suicide, gang culture and gun and knife crime. She co-ordinated the Harrow victim support scheme, worked with prison inmates and currently works with Mencap and also with the Boarding Schools Association on their Professional Development Certificate and Professional Practice Certificates. Jackie worked as a Samaritan for many years and has had articles published on a range of mental health issues. Most importantly, having worked as a secondary school teacher for 14 years she is in an ideal position to give teachers and other professionals in schools the tools they need to manage and support young people under stress.

The Conference It is essential that young people suffering from stress and mental health difficulties have skilled support and intervention from teachers, pastoral support staff and learning mentors at school. Such young people often find it difficult to concentrate and learn, to attend regularly and they may be displaying withdrawn or very challenging behaviour. They may be highly vulnerable or seriously at risk and so a failure to provide the correct intervention can have serious consequences. The conference will look in detail at the reasons for a range of emotions, behaviours and responses including stress, anxiety, mental health issues, depression and suicide but, most importantly, offers sensitive, effective tools and proven strategies to help young people cope with, or even overcome, their problems. The day will explore why young people sometimes self harm or suffer from eating disorders and show you how to provide support for these young people and their friends. With Jackie Cox as the tutor delegates can expect the day to be interesting, inspiring and offer realistic, practical solutions.
